Benefits of Meditation
Meditation is the practice of using your mind to induce a state of deep relaxation in both mind and body while staying alert.

It has a wide range of benefits. Meditation can reduce stress, slow aging, improve health, increase focus, concentration, memory and creativity. Stress reduction is important because stress inhibits the immune system and can cause health problems. Traditional meditation can be hard work. Listening to meditation programs makes meditation easy. Meditation brings about altered states of consciousness. The altered states are Alpha, Theta and Delta. Beta is a fully conscious state that you would be in before meditating.

Meditation can also help with weight loss. Stress can cause your body to store more fat. It can also cause you to eat more, especially junk food. People that meditate often reduce their cravings for unhealthy foods.

After I started meditating regularly I noticed I had more energy and required less sleep. If I meditate for 15 minutes I have a lot more energy the next day. Within two weeks the seasonal allergies that had bothered me for over 20 years went away. I have been allergy free for over 10 years now.

I meditate at night before I start watching TV. It helps if you meditate at the same time in the same place. You will need piece and quite and dim lighting. The more you meditate the easier it is to reach a deep state of relaxation.

If you use association you can learn to relax at will. Just before I meditate I repeat a number. After a while I could relax just by repeating the number. This makes it easier to meditate and I can relax at will whenever I want. You can also use this method when you go to the beach or another relaxing place.

Visualization is a big part of meditation. You may be asked to visualize a relaxing place or visualize yourself going down an elevator. To visualize you use your mind to see something that is not there. You can improve your ability to visualize with practice. When I go to the beach I close my eyes and visualize my sourondings. This makes it easier to visualize the beach when I meditate.

How you breath is important. Changing the way you breath can change how you feel. It can also affect your strength and intelligence. Most people use shallow chest breathing most of the time. They my take deep slow breaths to help them relax. However you can breath this way all the time. Your belly should expand and contract as your breath. Breathing this way is healthier for you and you will be more relaxed throughout the day.

Once you have reached a deep state of relaxation you can just enjoy the moment, reprogram you mind or do some problem solving. Simply becoming deeply relaxed will provide you with a lot of health benefits. It is easier to program your mind when you are relaxed so you could repeat some affirmatios like "I enjoy exercising" or "I am a money magnet". It is also a good state to be in for thinking of new ideas to solve your problems.

A classic meditation pose is to sit with your legs crossed. Your hands rest on your knees with the thumb and index finger joined to form a circle.

You do not need to sit like that and can even lie down if you want. The most important thing is that you find a comfortable position. However it can be easy to fall asleep. If you fall asleep you are no longer meditating.

Once you are comfortable the next step is to guide your mind and body into a deep state of relaxation. You should use deep slow belly breathing. There are different methods you can use.

I like listening to meditation programs because they make it a lot easier and I can meditate deeper with them than I can by myself. Since I know how long they last I do not think about the time.

You can get similar benefits practicing Tai Chi or Qigong. These exercises do more than strengthen your body and mind. They also relax and energize you.
